Find the differences.

New Years Eve 2008, working hard to finish a quilt in time.

New Years Eve 2009, working hard to finish a quilt in time.

Each year we have to make a wish list for Christmas, so that the chance of getting an ugly or useless gift is brought to a minimum. Mine included:
-gift vouchers from here and here.
-this book or one of these.
-a good hairbrush.
-or these cool glow-in-the-dark pins. (which at first I found hilarious, because who sews in the dark?! Later I found out they glow so you can find them easier when they fall on the floor. Quite clever really. In the dark.)
-I also put Gütermann thread on it and look at what my mum gave me:

It was one of the best gifts.

Liv's mummy gave me a 'Stokje': show us your Christmas tree.
But because we've got an ugly fake tree (really not worth looking at), I thought I'd show some pictures of a manger. About 20 years ago my uncle & aunt put a manger in their front yard at Christmastime. Several others followed their example (including my dad) and now there are over 40 Nativity scenes in our little town. A few years ago I painted a new Mother Mary and Joseph to go in the Nativity, including 2 sheep and an Angel.
And since it's the last time my dad will place the manger in his front yard, I thought I'd show it on my blog.

So sorry that there isn't a Christmas tree to admire. (just imagine a fake plastic tree...boring!)
I hope Naadjes en Draadjes has a more beautiful Christmas tree to show us, so hereby I give 'het stokje' to Hanne!

Christmas tradition.

Each year I make Christmas Cookies for Poppemie and her family. This year there are chocolate cookies with frosting, peanut butter cookies with a bit of chocolate, some oatmeal cookies and little vanilla waffles.
For the next couple of days, I'm going to enjoy Christmas with my family and I hope everybody in Blog-land has the opportunity to do the same.
Merry Christmas, Zalig Kerstfeest!

Don't watch it.

Just listen and enjoy...

A Toy Society Christmas.

This morning I've made my first 'Toy Society Drop'. I've placed the toy in the manger of the nativity scene in our town. My first thought was to leave it at the maternity ward in the hospital, but due to the snow, I had to choose another location. Hopefully somebody will find the little Babushka soon, it's so cold outside!

... so this is something I won't be doing again!
The Skruvsta is finally finished and I'm glad it is. It took me much longer than I thought it would. In my mind it was just a case of dismantling, using the fabric pieces as a pattern and sewing everything back together.
Yeah right!
In my dreams!
But without going into detail of the whole process, I can now say it's done, finished and finally back in use in my sewing room. I also put some wheels under it.
(which was also quit an undertaking; thank you very much Ikea for your lack of service!)
So let this be a lesson:
If it ain't broke, think long and hard before you try to fix it!

My weekend ... a few photo's:

starting a Christmas present,

wrapping presents with Poppemie (or at least trying to)

and watching Pollock, starring the fantastic Ed Harris, but being more fascinated by the beautiful house at times than by the movie itself. It's not the first time that happens, name a movie and I can probably say more about the set dressing and decor, than about the story itself. I mean the story of Something's Gotta Give is one big blur to me, but that house...

Christmas cARTs.

Today Poppemie made two Christmas cards. The one with the cat; she painted herself. The one with the candle; she painted with the 'Paint' program on the computer. I think they are wonderful!

Toy Society Drop.

On Sunday I signed into "The World Wide Christmas Toy Drop" from The Toy Society . If you never heard of it, you should really check out their website and maybe if you find the time even participate in this lovely initiative. (Maybe that my Belgian and Dutch blog colleagues want to join in, so we can spread the love a bit more here in the Benelux?)

The idea is simple: make a soft toy and place it somewhere in a public place for someone to find it. Just as a gift. I think it's a great idea and so I already started by making a little soft Babushka.

Don't know.

This is the bag I was working on last week. You can say that it's finished, but it doesn't 'feel' finished. For me it seems that something is missing about it, I just can't figure out exactly what it is. Ideas anyone?

I came across this secrets website, where people can anonymously share their deepest secrets with the rest of the world. Reading these little (and beautiful) notes, made me feel good about myself in a strange, kind of voyeuristic way. I guess it's just comforting to know that nobody is perfect...

P.S. I finished the bag today. I'm not 100% happy with the result, it's just missing something although I don't know what exactly. Anyway, I will show pictures of it tomorrow. Maybe you guys got some ideas of what I need to add to give it that little bit extra.

Four birds.

Because my bag isn't finished yet (hopefully I'll find time this weekend!), here some pictures of the 'Spool' birds I made last spring. They are actually pretty useless, but fun to make and they do spruce up my little sewing corner.
Have a great (rainy) weekend everyone!

A sneak peek of a new bag I'm working on. Hopefully I'll find time this week to finish it of.

Before & After.

I bought this desk a couple of months ago at a secondhand shop for € 7, 50. All it needed was some TLC and a new door. For the door I addressed my father and I took care of the rest; sanding & painting.

Now it has found a new home in the living room!

And aren't these handles beautiful? A friend bought them for me in India.

A little something II.

The experiment with the ribbons turned into a belt. I used some brown satin ribbon, gold coloured thread and ribbon, a piece of lining and a checkered dress i never wore because it was way to big. It was quite a labour intensive project but I'm pretty pleased with the result. Especially since it was all made with leftover pieces.
Now the only question remaining: when am I going to wear it? I don't really wear belts...

A little something.

I'm just trying a little something here.
Hope to show you more soon...

Baby Sese.

The very talented Constança from "Saídos da Concha" showed some pictures from her childhood and particularly the great, ahum, fashion from the 80's. So following in her footsteps, here some pictures from my childhood:

3 weeks old, 1980.
Wearing my Baptism dress, made from my mother's wedding dress.

6 months old, 1981.

With matching accessory.

15 months old, 1981.
With a pink bird on my head(?!).

18 months old, 1982.
Trying to see what's happening on the counter top.

But if there is one piece of clothing that is significant for my entire childhood, then it is a
"Sponse Broekske"

It's a short trouser made from a soft fabric (I don't know the English word for it). They came in all different colours, but had one thing in common: if you wore them, it meant that is was time to play!

Yesterday morning we made pancakes.

Pancakes with syrup.

Or should I say syrup with pancakes....

dinsdag 10 november 2009

Number 5. (and a confession)

The picture above shows block 5, the picture below shows how those same blocks are getting a hold of me . I'm totally scrap-obsessed these days!

I sorted them.

And then I folded them.

I also could have ironed them, but that was, even for me, a step to far.

I think it's getting time to find a new project to start, with big pieces of new and shiny fabric and not a single scrap inside. Any ideas?

maandag 9 november 2009

Number 4.

Number 4 is ready! I'm really starting to enjoy making these blocks. Every block is different and the fact that there is no real plan, so there is no fixed number of blocks I need to make, makes it all the more relaxed. Just go with the flow, so to speak.

My weekend...

... in a few photo's:

making and eating lasagna (sorry for the messy photograph, I should have taken a Before shot),

watching 'Dan in real life', (who wouldn't want a family like that?)

Ripping apart yet another chair (hopefully I can use this one in school)

and solving Sudoku puzzles (I know, I'm a nerd...).

Hope you had a fine weekend too.
